Day One – Monday, August 15: Travel with us to Newport, Rhode Island for a peek into the opulent life of America’s richest families in the “Gilded Age” of America. On arrival at our hotel, you will have time for dinner on your own, before we take a short drive to Tiverton Casino for those that would like to partake in a little gaming fun.
Day Two – Tuesday, August 16: Breakfast is included each morning at the hotel before the day’s activities. We start our day with a step-on guided tour of historic Newport to learn about how it became the Summer playground of America’s elite. After our tour, we’ll visit the Touro Synagogue - the oldest synagogue building still standing in the United States. Lunch is on your own in Newport, followed by our first of three “cottage” visits**. “The Elms” was the Summer residence of Mr. & Mrs. Edward Julius Berwind and was completed in 1901 in the style of an 18th century French chateau. The afternoon continues with a wine-tasting at a local vineyard. Dinner is included at a local restaurant.
Day Three – Wednesday, August 17: Depart for two more visits to Newport’s magnificent mansions. “The Breakers” is the grandest of Newport’s Summer “cottages,” and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family’s social and financial preeminence in turn-of-the-century America. “Marble House” was built between 1888 and 1892, and was inspired by the Petit Trianon at Versailles. After our visits we will continue to the Brick Marketplace for lunch on your own, with time to browse the shops of your choice. The highlight of the afternoon is a one-hour cruise on Newport Harbor aboard the “Amazing Grace.” See Newport at its picture-perfect best as our captain gives us close-up views of the lighthouses, America Cup yachts, grand estates, and much more. Dinner is included.
Day Four – Thursday, August 18: This morning after breakfast, you have a choice of visiting the International Tennis Hall of Fame or Audrain Auto Museum. You will have time for lunch on your own, before departing for home with wonderful memories of our vacation in the timeless elegance of Newport. Stops will be made en route for your comfort and dinner on your own.
** A self-paced audio tour is included with each mansion visit.
