TENTATIVE ITINERARY:

Day One – Your historical adventure starts with a scenic drive from the Rochester region, heading south into the heart of the Mid-Ohio Valley. Your destination is Parkersburg, WV, a city steeped in the echoes of the 19th-century oil and gas boom.

Upon arrival, check into the legendary Blennerhassett Hotel for a two-night stay. A true monument to the vision of Colonel William Nelson Chancellor, this architectural gem took six years to complete before opening its doors in 1889. Designed to be the finest establishment in West Virginia, the hotel served as a lavish sanctuary for the era's "Oil and Gas Barons." Today, its regal atmosphere and meticulous craftsmanship continue to offer a world-class experience for those seeking timeless elegance.

Prepare for an unforgettable evening at The Blennerhassett Restaurant & Lounge. Your included dinner features contemporary American cuisine served in a dining room that blends modern sophistication with historic charm. As you dine, the past comes to life. You will be joined by Harman and Margaret Blennerhassett, portrayed in exquisite period dress. Through a captivating performance, the couple will share the dramatic saga of their lives—from their Departure from Europe to their meteoric rise and eventual fall in American history. They will provide firsthand "commentary" on their famous island estate and mansion, leaving plenty of time to answer questions about the mysteries and legends that define Parkersburg’s local heritage.

Day Two – After an INCLUDED BREAKFAST, start your day at the Oil & Gas Museum, located in a striking 19th-century hardware building. This isn't just a collection of machinery; it’s a journey through the "black gold" boom that fueled West Virginia’s statehood. Across three floors, you’ll explore everything from early drilling tools to massive outdoor vintage engines. It’s an immersive look at the grit and innovation of the Appalachian petroleum industry and the sudden wealth that transformed the region.
Next, dive deeper into local lore at the Blennerhassett Museum of Regional History. This treasure trove spans three floors, showcasing everything from ancient prehistoric weapons to delicate jewelry and peculiar artifacts like a "burning glass." Before you leave, be sure to browse the gift shop, which features unique fine arts and crafts from local artisans.
We will then step onto a classic sternwheeler riverboat at Point Park for a breezy trip across the Ohio River. As you churn through the water, enjoy a complimentary boxed lunch on deck, taking in the river views just as travelers did centuries ago. Your destination is Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park. Once on shore, your experience includes a tour of The blennerhassett Mansion. Step inside the 7,000-square-foot masterpiece built by Harman Blennerhassett in 1798. Modeled after estates like Mount Vernon, the home is filled with London-sourced furniture, Parisian porcelain, and oriental carpets—a true pinnacle of elegance on the American frontier. After, relax as a team of horses pulls your wagon on a horse drawn wagon tour through the island’s scenic trails, offering a peaceful perspective on the estate’s lush landscape and hidden corners before we return to the mainland.

Just before AN INCLUDED DINNER at a local favorite, we will also visit CROWN DÉCOR & GIFTS. This charming, locally owned shop in Parkersburg, West Virginia that blends a gift boutique and home décor store all in one. The store is known for its ever-changing seasonal displays, offering everything from everyday home accents and collectibles to holiday décor like ornaments and themed decorations. In addition to decor and gifts, the shop features a fun confectionery element with treats like homemade fudge and ice cream, giving it a warm, inviting atmosphere.

Day Three – The last day of our journey starts with INCLUDED BREAKFAST, followed by a TOUR OF HISTORIC HENDERSON HALL. A beautifully preserved historic mansion overlooking the Ohio River in Williamstown, West Virginia. Built in 1859, it was the home of the Henderson family, prominent riverboat owners whose wealth and influence are reflected in the home’s elegant Victorian architecture and lavish furnishings. This will be our final stop before heading back to the Rochester area!
